A Star Has Fallen
We've lost another great one: the incomparable Paul Newman has died, at the age of 83, after a battle with cancer. Look up 'movie star' in the dictionary and Paul Newman's name must be there: not only gorgeous and talented (pictured: Newman with Diahann Carroll and Sidney Poitier in the jazz-themed romance "Paris Blues"), he was classy, generous, and kind, a loving husband to Joanne Woodward, a loving father. An American classic. Rest in peace, Mr. Newman.

This is so sad. He is one of my favorite actors. A great character and humanitarian. Just a great person. He will be missed.
And a great person offscreen. Philanthropist, socially-conscious, charitable. He knew there were things much bigger and more important than films and Hollywood. Terrible loss.
A life like his is a lesson for everyone. They've been playing wonderful tributes on CNN, etc this weekend. Millions of dollars were given to charity through his Newman's Own products alone, and that's not counting his Hole in the Wall Gang camps for children with cancer and other causes he supported.
I actually have not seen very many of his films, and now I want to see them all. "Paris Blues" is a wonderful movie, but it's not out on dvd (yet). I saw it on Turner Classic Movies once.
