Oh, he was no Christian Bale, or at least as far as we can tell. He never let his photograph be taken as an adult for us to see what he really looked like, though. We only have the self-portraits and his references to his looks in his letters. He had low self esteem, believing himself to be very ugly and unattractive to women. But he may have exaggerated that in his mind. I suspect "plain" more than "ugly."
I conveniently ignore in my novel the fact he had a mouth full of false teeth!
